A Mother's Day gift she can leave behind

A MemoriesBox gift records your mother's life story in her own voice, in sessions she controls. Three months is $39, twelve months $139. On the day she receives a card or an email; the first question follows.

Why this one lands

Americans planned to spend $38.0bn on Mother's Day in 2026, an average of $284.25 per person. 46% said they wanted something "unique or different", and 39% said the point was "creating a special memory" (National Retail Federation, April 2026, n=7,877).

Nearly four in ten people say the objective is a memory, and then the money goes to flowers, a card, a meal and jewellery, because those are the things on the shelf. The intention is about time and the purchase is about an object.

There is also the annual problem, which every family has and nobody has solved: she says she does not need anything, and she means it. What she does not have is a record of her own life in her own voice, and she is not going to buy that for herself, because buying it for yourself feels like a strange thing to do.

What $284 usually buys, and what this is instead

The usual gift What it is a year later What a recorded life story is a year later
Flowers Gone in nine days Four hours of her talking
A meal out A nice evening, remembered vaguely Her voice, saying your name
Jewellery Worn, or in a drawer Something her grandchildren can ask a question of
A photo book Looked at twice, kept forever The account of how those photographs happened
A spa day An afternoon she enjoyed Ten stories nobody in the family had heard

That table is unfair to flowers, which are lovely and which she would like. The honest position is that this is a different category of purchase rather than a better version of the same one, and most people who buy it also buy the flowers.

What she actually receives

On the day: a card or an email. That is all. There is no box, no device, nothing to unwrap unless you print the card or wrap it with a photograph. Knowing that in advance is the difference between a good handover and a confused one.

In the first week: someone sets up an account, which takes about ten minutes. Do this yourself. The single largest reason gifts like this go unused is that the setup lands on the person who was supposed to receive a present. Then the first session: one question, asked out loud, and a follow-up based on what she just said rather than the next line of a list. Twenty minutes is a normal length. There is no schedule to fall behind on, no streak, no reminder emails and nothing showing her how much she has not done. We do not send re-engagement notifications, deliberately.

The fear worth naming: that she will hear "I think you are running out of time." Gift-buyers worry about this more than anything else, and it is a fair worry. What avoids it is the reason you give. "I want the children to hear you tell the one about the bus" is a request about them. Anything with "while we still can" in it is a statement about her. It also helps that she can refuse any question, delete anything, and decide who is ever allowed to hear it — the page written for her explains that in her terms and is a reasonable thing to send with the card.

What it costs

Gift Price
3 months $39
6 months $78
12 months $139
Lifetime $659
VIP Setup, if you would like someone to sit with her and start it off $299 one-time
Printed book, later From $139

Twelve months at $139 is the usual choice, because this happens in short sessions over months rather than in one afternoon. Three months at $39 is a reasonable way to find out whether she takes to it. A voice model can be built once there are about 30 minutes of recordings, which is usually the first session or two.

If she won't use a phone or a computer

Some mothers have a phone that makes calls and no interest in anything further.

There is a device for that: a box that speaks a question aloud in the room and records the answer, with no phone, no app and no account. It is $79 one-time and it ships in 2027. It is therefore not this year's Mother's Day present, and we will not sell it as one.

For this year, the options are VIP Setup at $299, where a person arranges everything and sits with her for the first conversation, or recording ordinary phone calls yourself, which is free. For a parent who doesn't use a smartphone compares what every service in this category actually requires of the person being recorded.

Mother's Day is not on the same date everywhere, which matters on a site in five languages. In the United States, Germany, Ukraine and much of the world it is the second Sunday in May. In Spain it is the first Sunday in May. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, Mothering Sunday falls in March and moves with Easter. In Russia it is the last Sunday in November. Each language edition of this page uses its own date.

Questions people ask

Is this a strange gift for someone who is unwell?

It can be if it arrives as a countdown. It usually is not if the reason you give is about the grandchildren. If the situation is serious, after a diagnosis is the page to read instead, and it is not written as a gift page.

What if she doesn't want to do it?

Then she should not, and the subscription can be cancelled. Most reluctance is about being recorded rather than about talking, and it often changes after one short session. If she says no twice, take the no. How to record someone who doesn't want to be recorded is written for the case in between.

Can I set it up for her?

Yes, and you should. Ten minutes, once. She only ever needs to talk. If nobody in the family is nearby, VIP Setup at $299 one-time is a person doing the arranging and sitting in for the first conversation.

Can my brother and sister contribute too?

Yes. More than one person can ask questions and add material. The voice kept is hers.

Where do the recordings live, and can we get them out?

In the European Union, and yes. Everything can be exported at any time in open formats, without a subscription. Where your recordings actually live names the country, the provider and the sub-processors.
