There is no single best life story service, because families are not buying the same thing. Ranked for most families, Remento wins at $99 a year with a hardcover included. Why the same eight products come out in four different orders

A ranking is only meaningful once you name what it is ranking for. These four name theirs.

Best for most families weights price, whether a printed book is included, and whether the thing gets used at all. That is why Remento is first and why a $39 subscription somebody opens beats a $139 one nobody does.

Best StoryWorth alternative starts from a person who already knows what StoryWorth is and wants the same job done differently. It weights the book, the prompt cadence, and the price against StoryWorth's own tiers.

Best for a parent's voice weights reach over polish. If the person will not install an app, half the market disappears, and a service that calls a landline beats a better-designed one they will never open.

Best EU-hosted weights one column: whether the company names a European country for the recordings, and commits to it rather than claiming GDPR compliance and hosting in Virginia. Four services survive that filter. It is the narrowest list here and the only one we lead.

What none of the four lists will tell you

Renewal terms. What happens to your recordings, your edit access and your book credit when a subscription lapses is inconsistently published across this whole category. Read the terms on the company's own site before you pay. This is where buyers get caught, and no ranking can fix it for you.

Whether it gets used. The most expensive option is the one that sits untouched. 53% of people surveyed in the UK learned something new about a family member only after that person died, and 43% found it while clearing out their home (Ancestry.co.uk, November 2022, n=2,000).

If you want to spend nothing

Open the voice recorder already on your phone, sit down with the person, and ask them about the year they turned twenty. That is the whole method and it costs nothing. If there is already a voicemail from them on your phone, save it properly today — that is more urgent than choosing a subscription.
