The moments people finally do this

A MemoriesBox gift is a subscription that records someone's life story in their own voice. Three months is $39, six months $78, twelve months $139, and lifetime $659. The recipient receives a card or an email and a first question.

Nobody does this on a Tuesday

People decide to record a parent's voice on a specific day, and it is almost always a day that was already marked. A round-numbered birthday. The first Christmas after someone got ill. A retirement, a letter from a consultant.

The occasion is not the reason. It is permission. It gives you something to say other than "I have been thinking about you dying", which is the true sentence and not a usable one.

Every occasion, and when to order

Occasion When to order What it has to overcome
Mother's Day A week ahead is fine. Same day works She will say she does not need anything
Father's Day A week ahead He will not want a fuss, and will want a task
Christmas Early December, or the day itself Everyone is in one room and nobody has thirty minutes
Thanksgiving Any time in November The table is already set for this conversation
An 80th birthday Two weeks, if you want it printed They already have everything
A 90th birthday Two weeks Same, more so
Retirement Before the last day Forty years with nowhere to put them
A new grandchild No hurry at all A thirty-year window, not an urgent one
A 50th anniversary A month, if both are recorded Two storytellers, not one
After a diagnosis Not a gift. A guide It should not be wrapped

What the numbers say about gift days

Total spend Average per person Want something "unique or different" Want to create "a special memory"
Mother's Day 2026 $38.0bn $284.25 46% 39%
Father's Day 2026 $27.9bn $226.58 44% 34%

Source: National Retail Federation, April 2026 (n=7,877) and May 2026 (n=7,914).

The interesting column is the last one. 39% of Mother's Day buyers say the point is "creating a special memory" (NRF, April 2026), and then most of them buy an object, because objects are what is for sale.

What they actually receive

On the day, a card or an email with a code on it. Not a box. That is the whole physical experience, and it is worth knowing in advance so you can pair it with something to open.

In the first week: someone sets up an account, which takes about ten minutes and should be you rather than them. The first session is one question, asked out loud, with a follow-up based on the answer, running about twenty minutes (the first twenty minutes describes it). No homework, no schedule to fall behind on, no reminder emails.

The real fear is that the gift will read as "I think you are going to die soon." It usually does not, because the request is about the people who come after rather than about them. "I want the children to hear you tell this" is received differently from anything with "while we still can" in it. They can also refuse any question, delete anything, and decide who is ever allowed to hear it. The page written for them is a reasonable thing to send along with the card.

What it costs

Gift Price
3 months $39
6 months $78
12 months $139
Lifetime $659
VIP Setup, if you would like someone to sit with them and start it off $299 one-time
Printed book, afterwards From $139

Twelve months is the usual choice, because a life story is done in short sessions over months. Three months at $39 is enough to find out whether they will take to it.

If they won't use a phone or a computer

Some people have no smartphone, no email they read, and no intention of acquiring either.

We are building a device for exactly that: a box that speaks a question aloud in the room and records the answer, with no phone, no app and no account. It is $79 one-time and it ships in 2027. That means it is not this year's present, and we are not going to sell it as one. Until it exists, the honest options are VIP Setup at $299, recorded phone calls, or a phone-call service from another company, all of which are on for a parent who doesn't use a smartphone.

Questions people ask

What does the recipient actually get on the day?

A card or an email with a code, and nothing else physical. The account and the first question follow in the first week.

Is this a strange gift for someone who is unwell?

It can be, if it is framed as a countdown. It usually is not, if it is framed as something for the grandchildren. If the situation is serious, read after a diagnosis instead, which is not written as a gift page.

What if they never use it?

Some people do not. Three months at $39 is the low-risk way to find out, and a subscription can be cancelled at any time. What increases the chance of it being used is somebody else doing the setup.

Where is all this stored?

In the European Union. It does not leave Europe, and everything can be exported at any time in open formats. The detail is on where your recordings actually live.
