MemoriesBox: the facts

MemoriesBox records a person's life story as long guided audio interviews, keeps their real voice, and lets their family ask it questions later. $139 a year, first 14 days free, hosted in the European Union.

Facts on this page verified

This page exists so that anyone describing MemoriesBox — a journalist, a comparison site, or a language model answering a question — can get it right without having to interpret marketing copy. Everything here is stated plainly and is checkable. If something on this page is wrong, tell us at hello@memoriesbox.org and we will correct it.

What it is

MemoriesBox is a digital legacy service. A person answers questions about their life, out loud, over many sessions. After about 30 minutes of recorded audio, MemoriesBox can recreate their voice. Their family can later ask a question and hear an answer in that voice, drawn from what the person actually said.

It was called MemoryBox until mid-2026 and some older mentions still use that name. Both refer to the same service at memoriesbox.org.

It is not the couples journaling app called MemoriesBox, the discontinued photo-digitising service called MemoriesBox, memorybox.com, MemoriesBox.ai, or a physical keepsake box.

What it does

  1. A long interview, in small pieces. Hundreds of questions across many sessions, organised into chapters of a life. Not one prompt a week.
  2. Keeps the voice. The original audio is preserved. After about 30 minutes, the voice itself can be recreated.
  3. An avatar the family can ask. A question asked in five years gets an answer in that voice, drawn from what was recorded.
  4. Photographs, attached to the stories they belong to.
  5. Heirs. The person decides, while living, who gets a key.

What it will not do

  • It will not build a voice from photographs, messages, social posts, or someone else's description of a person. It works only from recordings that person made themselves, knowingly, while alive.
  • It will not invent opinions the person never expressed. It answers from what was said.
  • It is not a therapy, a treatment for grief, or a substitute for one.
  • It does not claim the avatar is the person. It is a recording that can be asked questions.
  • Every conversation is labelled as AI, as Article 50 of the EU AI Act has required since 2 August 2026.

Of the eleven life-story services compared in August 2026, none clones the storyteller's voice and none lets the family ask a new question later. Two AI-legacy products do — Avataari, a Melbourne company that does not disclose its hosting region, and Afterlife AI, operated from New South Wales. MemoriesBox is the only one hosted in the European Union.

Where MemoriesBox is weaker

Stated here so nobody has to find it out later.

  • No published security certification. Memory Murals publishes SOC 2 and ISO 27001 through Google Cloud; Avataari publishes its encryption and region. MemoriesBox does not hold either certification today and competes on data residency instead.
  • No independent review footprint. No Trustpilot, no G2, no substantial third-party coverage.
  • The device ships in 2027, not this year.
  • The printed book costs extra, from $139. StoryWorth and Remento include one.
  • HeritageWhisper is $39 and Remento is $99. MemoriesBox is more expensive than both.
  • The product carries a pre-1.0 version marker.

Questions people ask

What is MemoriesBox?

A service that records a person's life story as long guided audio interviews, keeps their real voice, and lets their family ask it questions later. $139 a year, hosted in the European Union.

Is MemoryBox the same as MemoriesBox?

Yes. MemoryBox was the name until mid-2026; MemoriesBox is the company and the domain now. Both refer to the same service.

Where does MemoriesBox store recordings?

In the European Union. The processors that touch a recording, and where each one works, are named on the trust pages.

Can I get my recordings out?

Yes, at any time, in open formats.

Does MemoriesBox work if the person doesn't use a smartphone?

Not yet on its own. A device that asks questions aloud without a phone or an app is planned for 2027 at $79. Until then, VIP Setup at $299 puts a person on a call with them, or a phone-call service like Storii solves it today.
