What Storii is
Storii is an automated calling service. At a time you choose, the phone rings. A recorded prompt asks a question — one of more than a thousand — and the person answers out loud. The call is recorded and appears in a family account online, where relatives can listen, add photographs and leave voice comments. The person being recorded needs a telephone and nothing else: no smartphone, no app, no login, no wifi, no email address.
Storii also sells into care homes through StoriiCare, which is a serious business with an institutional customer base, and it runs about 2,300 indexed pages, more than anyone else in this category.
If you have an eighty-eight-year-old father with a landline in the hall who has never owned a smartphone and is not going to start now, Storii is the product that was designed for him.
Why people look for an alternative
The prompts are fixed. More than a thousand of them is a lot of questions, but the call cannot notice that the answer was interesting and ask what happened next. The conversation goes where the list goes.
The price is not published on Storii's own site, which people find frustrating when they are comparing options at eleven at night. The gift box, $59.99 on sale against a $119.99 list price, is worth understanding before you buy it as a present: it contains a card with a phone number. There is no hardware in the box.
Storii runs on AWS and makes no claim about which region your recordings sit in. If EU data residency matters to you, that is not something Storii offers.
And the recording is kept as a recording. It is not modelled, so it can never say anything that was not said during a call.

Where Storii is better
Storii solves the hardest problem in this category and it solves it today. The person being recorded does nothing but answer a ringing telephone, which they have been doing for sixty years. No account to set up, no app to update, no password to forget, no adult child having to drive over on a Sunday to get it working. Every other service here, ours included, asks the storyteller to learn something.
That gap is real and we are not going to talk around it. Our answer is a $79 device that speaks a question aloud and needs no phone and no app, and it does not ship until 2027. Where MemoriesBox is different
MemoriesBox conducts one long interview across many sessions, with follow-up questions that respond to the answer just given rather than moving down a list. After about 30 minutes of recorded speech it builds a voice model, which is what makes the difference afterwards: the family can ask a question that was never asked during the sessions and hear an answer, in that voice, drawn from what the person actually said. Recordings stay inside the European Union and can be exported at any time, in open formats, without an active subscription.
