HeritageWhisper is the service on this site we agree with most, and it is a hundred dollars a year cheaper than we are. That is the honest starting point for this page.

What HeritageWhisper is

HeritageWhisper is a $39-a-year subscription built around a live AI interviewer called Pearl. Instead of a question arriving by email once a week, Pearl talks. It asks something, listens to the answer, and asks the follow-up that the answer invited. An adaptive interviewer is one that chooses its next question from the reply it has just heard, rather than from a fixed list. Almost nobody else in this category has attempted that, and it is the difference between an interview and a questionnaire.

What comes out is a digital living book that grows as more is recorded. There is no printed hardcover. The audio is kept.

Why people look for an alternative

Not usually price. The reasons people arrive here from HeritageWhisper are narrower than that.

There is no printed book, so if you wanted an object to give someone at Christmas, you will need to produce it yourself. HeritageWhisper does not disclose where it hosts its data, and it operates from the United States, which is the deciding factor for some European families and irrelevant to most American ones. The product is in English. And the voice is preserved as recordings but is not modelled, so the digital book can be read and listened to but cannot be asked anything that was not asked during the sessions.

Where HeritageWhisper is better

It is $39 a year against our $139. For most families that difference decides it, and it should.

Pearl is also genuinely good. Building an interviewer that hears an answer about a father's shop in 1961 and asks what the shop sold is difficult, and HeritageWhisper has done it and priced it at less than four dollars a month. That is the same conviction our product is built on — that the follow-up question is where the story actually lives — arrived at independently and delivered for a quarter of the price. If you want to be interviewed properly and you do not need anything else on this page, HeritageWhisper is the purchase.

Where MemoriesBox is different

Three things, and they are what the extra hundred dollars pays for.

The voice is modelled. After about 30 minutes of recording, MemoriesBox builds a synthetic model of the person's voice from their own recordings, so a grandchild can ask something in 2041 and hear an answer in that voice, drawn from what was actually said. Every such conversation is labelled as AI, which EU AI Act Article 50 has required since 2 August 2026.

The recordings stay in the European Union, and we name where. Full export, in open formats, at any time, without an active subscription.

And it works in five languages — English, German, Russian, Ukrainian and Spanish — which exists because families are often split across borders and the grandmother and the grandchildren no longer share a first language.

If none of those three matter to you, we are the wrong purchase at this price.

What HeritageWhisper costs

Plan Price What's included
Annual $39 / year Pearl's adaptive voice interviews, audio kept, digital living book
Printed book Not offered

Checked 17 August 2026. This is the lowest annual subscription price of the eleven life-story services we compared, and there is no printed book at any tier.

What none of them do

Of the eleven life-story services we compared in August 2026, none clones the storyteller's real voice and none lets the family ask a new question later. Two AI-legacy products do — Avataari, a Melbourne company that does not disclose its hosting region, and Afterlife AI, operated from New South Wales. MemoriesBox is the only one hosted in the European Union.

The eleven, with prices, are on the alternatives hub.

Choose HeritageWhisper if

  • $39 a year is the right budget, or the difference between $39 and $139 is the thing standing between you and doing this at all.
  • You want a real interview with real follow-up questions and nothing more elaborate than that.
  • The family is in the United States and data residency is not a concern for you.
  • You do not want a printed book.
  • Everyone involved speaks English.

Choose MemoriesBox if

  • You want the voice itself kept, and a way for the family to ask it something later.
  • Where the recordings physically live matters to you. Ours stay in the European Union.
  • The family speaks more than one of English, Russian, Ukrainian and Spanish.
  • You want a documented export you can take away at any time without an active subscription.
  • You want the option of a printed book later, from $139.

In fairness: we are at version 0.4.1, we have no independent review footprint, and we hold no SOC 2 or ISO 27001 certification.

Questions people ask

Is HeritageWhisper worth it?

Yes. At $39 a year it is the cheapest way we know of to be interviewed by something that asks a real follow-up question, and the audio is kept. What you do not get is a printed book, a stated hosting location, or a voice you can put a question to afterwards.

How much does HeritageWhisper cost?

$39 a year, checked on 17 August 2026 from HeritageWhisper's own site. There is no printed book at any price. For comparison, MemoriesBox is $139 a year with 14 days free, and Remento is $99 a year with a hardcover included.

What is Pearl in HeritageWhisper?

Pearl is HeritageWhisper's live AI voice interviewer. It asks a question aloud, listens to the answer, and chooses its next question from what it heard, rather than reading down a fixed list. It is the feature the product is built around.

Does HeritageWhisper keep the person's actual voice?

Yes, the recordings are kept and form part of the digital living book. The voice is not cloned or modelled, so it can only ever say what was said during a session, and HeritageWhisper does not disclose where those recordings are stored.

If you want to keep the voice itself

53% of Americans cannot name all four of their grandparents (OnePoll for Ancestry, March 2022, n=2,113). Almost any service on this page fixes that, and the $39 one fixes it cheaply. Pay $139 only if the voice, the questions your family has not thought of yet, and where the files live are what you are actually buying.
